Columbia, Mo. - The Western Illinois indoor track and field teams were paced by a first-place finish in the 60 -meter hurdles by junior Tony Odele at the Missouri Invitational at the Hearnes Fieldhouse on January 9.
Odele finished the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.42 and placed eighth in the shot put to lead the Leathernecks in scoring. Not far behind, senior teammate Mitch Thompson finished the event with a time of 8.51, a fourth-place finish.
The 400-meter relay team of David Glenn, Mike Hemming, Brian Pinta and Torinn Pope took sixth with a time of 3:33.58.
Senior Jared Schmidt placed fifth in the one mile run with a time of 4:22.90 and took sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.94. Senior teammate Jason Henderkott placed fifth in the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:09.80.
In field events, senior Josh Schupbach took sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.15 meters (13'07.25'') and senior David Roscoe placed sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 16.68 meters (54'08.75''). Freshman Brayden Sherrick took seventh in the weight throw (50'11.50'') and tenth in the shot put (43'07.75'').
For the Westerwinds, senior Faith Chew had the highest finish on the team with a second-place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 3.35 meters (10'11.75''). In other field events, senior teammate ChrisDell Harris placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.31 meters (17'05.25'').
Harris also took fourth in the 60-meter dash (7.76) and finished eighth in the 200-meter dash (26.68). Senior teammate Beth Whalen finished the 3000-meter run in fifth-place with a time of 10:27.05.
Rounding out the scoring for the Westerwinds was junior Katie Jay and freshman
Amy Byers who placed eighth and ninth in the 600-meter run with times of 1:29.28 and 1:30.83.
The Leathernecks and Westerwinds will be back in action at the Iowa Open on January 17 at the UI Recreation Building.Â
