MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois men's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Radford University in the Leathernecks opening match of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday, Aug. 30.
The game remained scoreless going into the second half until senior Luke Greenwell (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame) scored his first goal of the season. In the 54th minute of the second half, Greenwell headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick from teammate Martin Browne, Jr. (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo).
In the 80th minute of the match, Browne would get a goal of his own. Browne scored an unassited goal off a free kick that deflected off a Radford defender into the back of the net.
Defensively, the Leathernecks held Radford to a total of seven shots for the match and only allowing two shots on goal. In the net for Western, freshman
Andrew Ryan (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) played the entire match while making two saves.
The Leathernecks will have Sunday, Aug. 31 off to prepare for their Labor Day match-up against the Dolphins of Jacksonville University. The Monday match-up will kick off at 12:30 p.m.
