MACOMB, Ill.- Juniors
Amanda Griffin and
Yana Meinert each won singles flight and teamed up to win the doubles flight as play wrapped up at the 3rd Annual Hinds-Kellogg Classic.
"This was a great way for most of the team to finish up the fall semester," said Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. "We'll have a couple people in the Regional tournament, but these were the final matches for most of us. I'm really proud of how everyone played and I'm particularly happy with how we handled all of the intrasquad matches. Obviously, Amanda and Yana both going undefeated in singles and doubles over the weekend is a highlight, but Kate, Ashley, and Stephanie only lost to each other and Courtney was a 10-pt tiebreaker away from also making the finals. All-in-all, a very successful weekend for Western Illinois Women's Tennis."
Griffin opened up Saturday's singles play in Flight A with a win over sophomore teammate
Kate Kennedy, 6-1, 6-0. In the championship match, Griffin would square off against another teammate, junior
Ashley Clark, defeating Clark by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Kennedy would finish in third place in Flight A with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laura Horning from SIU-Edwardsville. Baumer won her final match over Erika Englebrecht from Olivet Nazarene giving the Westerwinds first, second, third and fifth place finishes in Flight A.
Meinert began Flight B singles play on Saturday with a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (6) win over Olivet Nazarene's Jennifer Ramsay. Meinert would play another super-tiebreaker in the championship match, defeating Ali Wulfers from SIU-Edwardsville, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3). Junior
Courtney Brooks finished in fifth place in Flight B, winning both of her matches on Sautrday.
In doubles play, Griffin and Meinert opened up with an 8-4 win over Olivet Nazarene's No. 3 doubles team. They followed that win up with an 8-2 win over SIU-Edwardsville's No. 1 doubles team in the championship match.
