BOONE, N.C. - Western Illinois won the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center Appalachian Classic Championship with a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern on Sunday.
Luke Greenwell (Quincy, Ill.) notched his second game-winning goal of the tournament in the 72nd minute of the match. Phil Duret (Sarasota, Fla.) sent a long ball into the box, Martin Browne, Jr. (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) was able to gain control and find Greenwell in front of the goal for the lone score of the match. It was the first assist of the season for Browne.
"Greenwell was in the right place at the right time again," head coach Eric Johnson said of the game winner. "I thought we played more patiently and connected on more passes today. We created some pretty good opportunities. I think we wore them down with pressure defensively. For it being the second game on a weekend road trip we played very well."
The Leathernecks (2-0-0) and Eagles Southern (1-1-0) battled to a scoreless tie for the first 71 minutes of the game. The first half saw the defense of Western keep the Eagles from registering a single shot. The Leathernecks managed six shots in the first frame.
The second half saw a change in net for Western as junior college transfer Charlie Sales (Farmersville, Ill.) made his first appearance for the Leathernecks. Sales came up with three saves in the half to combine with sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Paterson (Thunder Bay, Ontario) for the shutout.
"Paterson played great all weekend and made a nice save. Charlie is right there though and we wanted to give him a look and let him know that we are confident in him. We're not settled in on who's doing what. We want to keep looking at different guys to make sure that we are rewarding guys who deserve the chance to get on the field. I think we're a little deeper this year so that's been a real positive."
In addition to winning the team title, Western brought home five individual awards. Greenwell was named Offensive MVP while Duret brought home Defensive MVP honors. Preston Bernardi (Naperville, Ill.), Martin Browne, Jr., and
J.J. Stefanic (Greenfield, Wis.) were named to the all-tournament team.
"I think our physical presence and size is helping us in these tight games," added Johnson. "We've had good efforts from a lot of guys and obviously our five guys on the All-Tournament team had a great weekend."
Western will hit the road again this weekend when it travels to Springfield, Mo., for the Comfort Inn/Diadora Tournament at Missouri State. Western takes on Drake Friday at 5 p.m. and Missouri State Saturday at 7 p.m.
