Westerwinds set new winning streak

Bowling Green, Ohio - Misako Inaba and Jessicah Hughes scored a goal each for the Western Illinois women?s soccer team Sunday at Cochrane Field in a 2-0 win against Bowling Green State. The win sets a new mark for the longest winning streak in the history of the program. The fourth win in a row for the Westerwinds breaks the previous win streak of three games set by the 2005 team. Last year?s team won three straight games on two occasions.?We got two wins both at home and on the road against schools with bigger budgets, so that was huge for us,? said head coach Kevin Sherry. ?We are taking big steps in this program. We are improving all the time. I hope these wins will continue to elevate the program. Teams used to not even think about us and wonder who we were, but now they have to worry about us.?The win also increases the best start in school history to 4-0.Both goals came within about three minutes of each other. Inaba, a junior transfer from Kashiwa, Japan, scored her first goal as a student-athlete in the NCAA. She scored when she lifted the ball over Falcons? goalkeeper, Tiffany Hansen, after she received a pass from Ashley Hoch in the 26th minute.Hughes? goal came in the 29th minute off a dual assist from Keeley Murray and Hoch. It was Hughes? second goal of the year.?We dominated both sides of the ball today,? said Sherry. ?We dominated possession and speed of play all day. I knew in the first 10 minutes that we were going to win this game. The team as a whole was outstanding, but my word, the defense was amazing.?Samantha Clark and Julie Remes were barely challenged in the net as Bowling Green took only three shots with two being on goal. The Westerwinds took 11 shots with seven being on goal. Clark and Remes recorded a save each. Remes played all of the second half after Clark went down with an injury when she received a knee to the side.Sherry also spoke highly of Lainey Bruhn. The sophomore, from Leawood, Kan. may not show up in the stat book all the time, but Sherry said that the things she does on the field show true leadership.?She reads the game like no other person I have ever coached,? said Sherry. ?She sees the play before it happens. She picks up on everyone else?s loose pieces and she protects everyone on the field.? The Westerwinds return home Wednesday for what will be an emotionally charged game between Graceland University and WIU. Sherry will be playing his former team for the first time since he became the head coach at Western. It will also be an emotional game for Inaba and Clark who both transferred from Graceland to follow Sherry. Kick off for the game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
