Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson addressed members of the media and community Monday at the weekly luncheon.
On Preparations for Nebraska:The first thing to do, from a coaching standpoint, is convincing your players that you have to find a way to play the perfect game. That?s obviously unrealistic, so a better way to explain it is to find a way to be in midseason form on opening day. That?s difficult to do, and very few teams will be able to claim that after game one. We?re getting ready for a couple different schemes. We don?t know what they?ll do, but we?re confident that they?ll play one of those fronts, probably more.We certainly have an idea of the West Coast offense. Colorado ran it a year ago, so (defensive coordinator Vince) Okruch defended it every day in practice. We can prepare our number one defense ell with what we run on offense. Unlike other years, we?ve spent more time with our number one (offense) going up against our number one (defense). That?s not to see who?s better, but to give our defense the very best picture of what Nebraska might do. We haven?t had very much of a scout team this fall. It?s been a lot of one-on-one and one-on-two because we do have a quality opponent on opening day.The players are ready to go. They recognize the huge challenge ahead of them, and they?re going into this with their eyes wide open. They recognize it will be one of the stiffest opening days for any I-AA team, and they know that they?re representing all of I-AA football.
On the outcome of the game:We have to be sure that after the game we can say we played well. If we play well I?m not that concerned about the score. Because if we play well, the score will be competitive. That?s the mentality we have going into the game.If at the end of the game we come out without any major injuries, and we find a way to gain confidence in how we play, then I?ll be comfortable with the score whatever it might be.
On the starting quarterback:If the game were being played tonight, Adam Smith would start at quarterback. There are a couple more practices before Saturday, though, and we certainly reserve the right to start (Steve) LaFalce. We?re confident they?ll both play this weekend, and possibly even in the first four games.
