MACOMB, Ill. - Nine Western Illinois University student-athletes were named to the Gateway Football All-Conference Team, including first-team selections Travis Glasford, Fred Layne and James Norris. Wyatt Green and Michael Woods earned second-team bids while Reggie Gray, Justin Langan, James Norris and Pat Ryan were named to the honorable mention list.Southern Illinois quarterback Joel Sambursky was named the league?s Offensive Player of the Year, and Illinois State linebacker Boomer Grigsby became the first player in league history to win three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Southern?s Jerry Kill was earned his second straight Coach of the Year Award.Glasford (Miami, Fla.) led the Leathernecks in rushing (108.0 ypg), receptions (46 for 464 yards) and scoring (11 rushing TD, 3 receiving TD) during his junior campaign. He recorded four 100-yard rushing games and a pair of 200-yard games, and became the only player in school history to record 100 rushing and receiving yards in the same game (vs. Indiana State). He recorded more receiving yards than any running back in school history and ranked among the nation?s top-20 in rushing, all-purpose yardage and scoring. Glasford, who was one of two first-team running backs, ranked second in league in rushing, third in receptions per game, and led the league in all-purpose yards (154.4 ypg). This marks his second all-conference honor, having been selected to the second team a year ago. Layne (Granite City, Ill.) started 10 games at left guard on his way to a third consecutive first-team selection. The senior allowed just one sack and graded out at an average of 90% on pass plays. Layne was also a 2003 Associated Press and Sports Network All-America recipient, and a 2002 and 2003 all-Gateway first team member. Only two other players in school history (Gunnard Twyner, 1993-95; Mike Scifres, 2000-02) have won earned three first-team all-Gateway honors.Norris (Northridge, Calif.) was named to the all-conference first team as a return specialist. The senior was the league?s only player to rank among the top three in both kick returns (2nd) and punt returns (3rd), and he led the league in all-purpose yardage (151.4 ypg) during conference games. Norris set school records of 31 kick returns and 789 return yards (25.5 ypr), and also returned 18 punts for 180 yards (10.0 ypr). Last season, he earned a spot on the All-Newcomer Team and the all-conference second-team as a return specialist. Green (Burnside, Ill.) and Woods (Romulus, Mich.) both earned their first all-conference honors. Green started all 11 games at linebacker as junior and ranked second in the league with 107 tackles, behind three-time Defensive Player of the Year Boomer Grigsby. Green recorded five double-digit tackle performances, including a career-high 17 tackles at Western Kentucky. Woods started 10 games at free safety and led all Leatherneck defensive backs with 62 tackles. He collected a team-best four interceptions (45 return yards) and also broke up three passes and forced a fumble.Gray (Chicago, Ill.) caught 33 passes for 551 yards and a touchdown as a junior, averaging 50.1 yards per game and 16.7 yards per catch en route to his second consecutive all-conference honor. Langan (Davenport, Iowa) earned his third all-league award after becoming Western?s all-time leading scorer and rewriting the kicking record book. He ended his four-year career with 335 points and scored in all 47 games. Norris earned an honorable mention spot as a wide receiver, catching 39 passes for a team-high 729 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 66.3 yards per game and 18.7 yards per catch, and recorded four 100-yard games. Ryan (Coal City, Ill.) earned his first all-conference honor after starting all 11 games at defensive end and registering 42 tackles. He tallied a team-high nine tackles for loss (-28 yards) and also recorded a sack, five pass breakups and two blocked kicks.
