MISSOULA, Mont. - David Akers and Fu?Ad Khaleel blocked Montana?s 33-yard field goal attempt in the second overtime to preserve a 43-40 Western Illinois University victory in the first round of the I-AA playoffs. Justin Langan kicked a school-record five field goals, including a 23-yarder in the second overtime, as the Leathernecks (9-3) took control of a back-and-forth battle that saw six lead changes and four ties. Langan, who was 5-of-5 on the day and added four extra points, opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal on the first drive of the game, but Grizzly quarterback Craig Ochs scored on a 13-yard run to put Montana up 7-3 with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter. Langan connected on a 26-yarder early in the second and the Grizzlies retaliated with a pair of back-to-back 43- and 48-yard field goals by Chris Snyder, who was 4-of-5 on the day. Travis Glasford tied the game at 13-13 with just over four minutes to play in the half with a one-yard leap over the pile, reaching the end zone on his second effort after initially being stopped by the Grizzly defense. Montana regained the lead on a two-yard run by Lex Hilliard with 0:29 left and Langan hit a 46-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer to bring the Leathernecks within four, 20-16. After recovering a fumble on the Grizzlies? opening drive of the second half, Western capped a six-play, 21-yard drive with a four-yard pass from Travis Glasford to a wide-open Russ Michna, marking the first career pass for Glasford and Michna?s first career reception, and giving the Leathernecks a 23-20 lead. The two teams traded touchdowns and Snyder added two more field goals, from 22 and 39 yards out, as the Grizzlies regained a three-point lead, 33-30 with 4:29 left to play. Western then drove 72 yards on just eight plays to put Langan in position to tie the game with a 25-yard field goal at the 1:03 mark. The Grizzlies, who suffered just their third loss in 20 postseason games at home, drove into Leatherneck territory in the final seconds, but were stopped short on fourth-and-three as regulation ended.Each team scored a touchdown in the first overtime period as Montana?s Jon Talmage caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Disney and Western retaliated with a 25-yard pass from Michna to Jermaine High. The Leathernecks had the first possession of the second overtime, driving to the six-yard line where a third-down pass was batted down in the end zone forcing Langan hit the game-winning field goal on fourth-and-three. Justin Green rushed three times for nine yards on Montana?s final drive.Michna completed 22 of 31 passes for 375 yards (ties a career-high set against Southern Illinois this season) and two touchdowns while Western earned its first road playoff win in school history. It was the Leathernecks? first overtime game since a triple-overtime loss at Indiana State in 1999, and their first overtime playoff game since a 20-17 loss at Marshall in 1991. Reggie Gray caught six passes for a game-high 106 yards, his second consecutive 100-yard game, and the Leathernecks recorded 517 total yards. The Grizzlies end the season with a 9-4 record.Western Illinois will travel to Colgate (13-0) next Saturday for the quarterfinal matchup.
