Leatherneck Softball Wins Both Games of Doubleheader Against Tennessee State

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois softball put together an all-around performance on Sunday, earning a doubleheader sweep over Tennessee State with a 14-11 win in game one and a 4-2 comeback victory in game two. With the wins, the Leathernecks improve to 12-25 overall and 7-12 in OVC play.

Game 1: Western Illinois 14, Tennessee State 11
The opener turned into an offensive battle, with the Leathernecks' bats being on full display in the matchup.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Western Illinois responded with a five-run second inning to take control. Raegan Boone had a successful day at the plate with a four-hit performance, while Ruby Tarr added two hits and two RBIs, including a triple.

Western extended its lead with a four-run fourth inning, capitalizing on the wild pitches from Tennessee State. The Tigers answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 9-7, but the Leathernecks continued to add insurance in the fifth and sixth innings.

Libby Spaulding went the distance in the circle to earn her seventh win of the season, working through a late push from Tennessee State in the seventh to secure the 14-11 victory.

Game 2: Western Illinois 4, Tennessee State 2
The second contest featured a much tighter contest throughout the game with Western completing the comeback.

Tennessee State struck first with two runs in the opening inning, and the score held until the second when Alijah Williams brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

The game remained locked there into the seventh inning, where the Leathernecks bats rallied. Addie McLaughlin scored the tying run on a passed ball before Ruby Tarr came through again, ripping a two-RBI double to left center to give Western Illinois its first lead of the game at 4-2.

Lillie Wools shut the door on the Tigers with four scoreless innings in relief to earn the series win and complete the comeback.

Western Illinois will look to complete the series sweep in tomorrow's matchup.
