Leatherneck Softball Kicks Off 2026 Season at the Rosemont Tournament

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois softball opens the 2026 season this weekend at the Rosemont Tournament hosted by DePaul, beginning Friday with a matchup against Oakland at the Parkway Sports Complex in Rosemont.

The Leathernecks will play multiple games across the weekend as part of the early-season tournament, facing a mix of nonconference opponents while getting their first live-game reps of the year.

Experienced Core

A key strength for the Leathernecks entering the 2026 season is the experience and continuity they bring back across the roster. Western Illinois returns 15 players from last year's squad, including a veteran core that has logged significant innings, at-bats, and defensive reps at the collegiate level. That familiarity provides a strong foundation as the program builds momentum heading into the spring.

The returners span every position group, highlighted by experienced arms in the circle, proven depth in the infield, and a lineup that features multiple everyday contributors from a season ago. With five seniors and five juniors leading the way, the Leathernecks benefit from leadership both on and off the field.

OVC Player's to Watch

Western Illinois features a trio of junior standouts who have established themselves among the Ohio Valley Conference's most impactful players, bringing both experience and continuity into the 2026 season.

Payton Brown returns after earning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors, solidifying her place as one of the league's premier all-around performers. Brown's versatility allows her to contribute at multiple defensive positions while providing steady production in the lineup, making her a centerpiece for the Leathernecks throughout conference play.

Lillie Wools anchors the pitching staff with extensive experience against OVC competition. Her ability to manage key innings and navigate high-pressure situations will be a major factor as Western Illinois works through the conference slate.

Sophia Sanchez adds consistency in the infield, pairing reliable defense with an offensive approach that allows her to impact the game in multiple ways.

2025 Rosemont Performance

Western Illinois softball had a strong showing at the 2025 Rosemont Dome Tournament, kicking off the season with competitive play against several tough opponents. The Leathernecks opened the tournament on February 8 with a thrilling 8-6 victory over Detroit Mercy, showcasing their offensive firepower. Later that day, they faced Green Bay in a close contest, falling 3-5 in a game that came down to the final innings.

On February 9, WIU bounced back with a 5-4 win against Butler, demonstrating resilience and clutch hitting. The tournament wrapped up with an extra-inning battle against DePaul, where the Leathernecks fell 2-3.

Key's to Tournament Success

Start Strong on the Mound: Establishing early pitching dominance will set the tone for the tournament and help the Leathernecks gain confidence in their first games of the year.

Jump on Early Opportunities at the Plate: Capitalizing on scoring chances early in games can create momentum and relieve pressure in these opening-season contests.

Stay Sharp Defensively: Clean, mistake-free play in the field is essential to build team rhythm and confidence as the season gets underway.
