MACOMB, Ill.- Western Illinois wrapped up its weekend in Millington, Tennessee, on a high note, earning two of three wins over Akron behind explosive offensive performances. The Leathernecks combined for 26 runs across the two games, highlighted by a 16-8 outburst on Friday and a 10-6 victory on Sunday. With timely hitting, power at the plate, and steady performances on the mound, WIU controlled the tempo and showcased its depth throughout the series. Earlier in the weekend, WIU dropped a 5-0 decision to the Zips, but the Leathernecks responded dominantly, bouncing back to secure the series momentum and close out the trip with confidence.
GAME 1
Western Illinois erupted for 16 runs on 19 hits to power past Akron, 16-8, on Friday afternoon. The Leathernecks set the tone early with a five-run second inning and added five more in the sixth, finishing with six extra-base hits and four home runs on the day. Liam Bushey led the charge with a 2-for-5 performance and a team-high six RBI, while Isaiah Monge went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Krayton Morse and Tyler Large each homered and drove in two, and Joe Connolly added three hits at the top of the lineup. On the mound, Max Tripure earned the win, striking out three across five innings as WIU secured the eight-run victory.
GAME 2
Western Illinois fell 5-0 to Akron on Saturday afternoon, dropping to 1-4 on the season. The Leathernecks were limited to just three hits in the contest and were unable to capitalize on five walks. Joe Connolly, Josh McClintock, and Krayton Morse each recorded a hit for WIU, but the offense stranded 10 runners and couldn't find the timely hit to break through. Akron broke a scoreless tie in the fourth and added insurance late, highlighted by a solo home run from Henry Hayman and a two-RBI performance from Kelton Phillips. Western Illinois starter Jason Buhl turned in a solid outing, allowing just one earned run over five innings with three strikeouts, but the bullpen surrendered four runs across the final three frames as the Zips pulled away.
GAME 3
Western Illinois closed out the weekend with a 10-6 victory over Akron on Sunday. The Leathernecks struck first with a four-run opening inning and never trailed, adding three more runs in the fourth to create breathing room. Gage Hoover powered the offense with a home run and a game-high five RBI, while Krayton Morse chipped in two RBI, and Cordell Coburn added a run driven in. WIU showed patience at the plate with 13 walks and made the most of its seven hits. On the mound, Jackson Rodgers earned the win and was dominant in relief, tossing five innings while allowing just one run and striking out seven to seal the 10-6 win.
The Leathernecks will continue their run by coming home to host the St. Ambrose Bees Feb. 24 at 1 pm.
