MACOMB, Ill.- On Tuesday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium, Western Illinois University's baseball team achieved a strong 12-3 win over St. Ambrose University.
Their offensive strength and effective relief pitching were key factors in this win. With this victory, the Leathernecks improved their season record to 3-4, scoring across five different innings and securing a total of 12 hits against the Bees.
WIU leveled the score in the second when Isaiah Monge managed to steal home. Wandel Campana then crossed home plate on a wild pitch, pushing WIU ahead 2-1. To extend their advantage, Liam Bushey and Cordell Coburn each added runs in the third inning, bringing the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth inning, the Leathernecks burst out with five runs on six hits. Krayton Morse hit a single that brought in two runs, while Joe Connolly and Coburn each contributed an RBI. Monge then finished the inning with a double to center field, making it 9-1 for the Leathernecks. St. Ambrose scored twice in the sixth, but Western came back strong in the seventh.
Kamryn Link's triple brought in two more runs during a three-run inning, and Paul Osting added another RBI, pushing the score to 12-3 and securing control of the game for the Leathernecks. Brett Buchanan pitched two innings without giving up any runs and struck out two batters.
Overall, they allowed three runs and struck out seven opponents. Monge, Hoover, Osting, Morse, and McClintock all got hits as Western dominated throughout the day. The Leathernecks now prepare to travel for their next series against the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 27- Mar. 1.
