MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Women's Basketball standout Mia Nicastro has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2026 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by Her Hoop Stats, the organization announced Wednesday.
The award, first presented in 2020, recognizes the top player in women's college basketball from the nation's mid-major conferences. Named after WNBA legend and current Becky Hammon, the honor celebrates excellence on the court while highlighting standout performers outside of the traditional high-major conferences.
Nicastro's selection places her among the nation's elite mid-major players and continues a strong tradition of success for the Leathernecks. The 10 semifinalists represent programs across eight conferences, with the list narrowing to five finalists in early March. The winner will be announced around the Final Four.
Throughout the 2025-26 season, Nicastro has been a driving force for Western Illinois, showcasing consistency, leadership, and impact on both ends of the floor. Her performance has helped elevate the Leathernecks in conference play while earning national recognition.
To be eligible for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, student-athletes must compete in one of the 26 conferences classified as mid-major. The award's preseason watch list was announced in October before being trimmed to 10 semifinalists in February.
Nicastro now looks to become the first Western Illinois player to advance to the finalist stage and bring the prestigious honor to Macomb.
