Macomb, IL. – Western Illinois University men's soccer earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against the University of Southern Indiana on Thursday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. With the result, the Leathernecks move to 1-2-3 in conference play and 3-9-3 overall, while the Screaming Eagles advance to 1-1-4 in the conference and 2-7-4 overall.
The Leathernecks struck early, netting the opening goal less than two minutes into the match by Senior Forward Liam Gainey who seized quick momentum. Both teams then locked into a defensive battle for the remainder of the first half, with WIU maintaining its 1–0 advantage heading into halftime.
Southern Indiana equalized in the 58th minute when Edin Cvorovic found David Davila in the box for the tying goal. Western Illinois' defense held strong for the rest of the second half, limiting quality chances, while senior goalkeeper Micah Ramirez recorded several key stops to keep the score tied.
Overall, USI outshot WIU 10–8 and held a slight 6–5 edge in shots on goal. The Leathernecks led 7–6 in corner kicks.
With the draw, Western Illinois continues to build momentum in conference play as the regular season nears its conclusion. The Leathernecks are back at it this Sunday against Liberty at 11 a.m.
