EVANSVILLE, IN- Despite a tough 72-58 loss to Southern Indiana, the Western Illinois Women's Basketball team showcased resilience and strong individual performances in Saturday's Ohio Valley Conference clash at Liberty Arena. The Leathernecks (9-8, 3-5 OVC) put up a spirited second-half fight but couldn't overcome an early deficit.
Raegan McCowan led all scorers with 18 points on 50% shooting. McCowan added three rebounds and hit key shots to keep WIU within striking distance during a strong third-quarter surge. Mallory McDermott provided critical support, scoring 13 points and going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Addi Brownfield contributed 12 points and four rebounds despite fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
The Leathernecks faced a steep challenge after trailing 38-19 at halftime. However, WIU came out of the break with renewed energy, scoring 26 points in the third quarter—nearly equaling their first-half total. McCowan and McDermott combined for several key plays, helping the Leathernecks narrow the gap to single digits at one point.
Defensively, WIU forced 15 turnovers, including four steals, and limited Southern Indiana to 40% shooting in the second half. They also cut down on turnovers, committing just one in the third quarter, which allowed them to capitalize on offensive opportunities. Despite the second half surge, the Leathernecks couldn't get the stops they needed to mount a comeback.
WIU will now return home for four straight home games inside of Western Hall. They will be back in action on Thursday night at 5 p.m. taking on Little Rock at home.
