MACOMB, IL – After taking a pair of pitcher's duels on Saturday, Western Illinois could not complete the three-game sweep as they fell 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to the Lindenwood Lions. WIU falls to 10-29 on the season and 5-12 in Ohio Valley play.
Hits were hard to come by for the Leathernecks on Sunday. Adam Juran opened the ball game with an infield single, but WIU only managed three more hits the rest of the game. The bright spot was Western Illinois pitching. After allowing only one run throughout two games on Saturday, the Leatherneck pitching staff came out dealing on Sunday.
Kyle Rosenfeld picked up his third start in seven days, going four innings and striking out three. Rosenfeld worked around a two-out double, keeping the game tied at zero after one. Lindenwood scratched across a run in the second as they grabbed the 1-0 lead. Rosenfeld worked a scoreless third, giving his offense a chance to stay in the game.
WIU's offense used that chance in the top of the fourth as they plated a run to tie the game at 1-1. Kyree Alexander started the inning with a single. He then moved into scoring position by stealing second base, which Liam Bushey capitalized. The junior singled down the left field line, scoring Alexander as WIU tied the game.
Lindenwood had the final push, plating two runs in the fifth, pulling ahead 3-1.
Adam Juran, Kyree Alexander, Liam Bushey, and Max Slavens all had singles in Sunday's ball game. Trevor Leon reached base twice, drawing two walks. Kyle Rosenfeld and Mason Telford did all the work on the mound. Both pitchers went 4.0 complete innings. Rosenfeld struck out three Lions, but Telford did not allow a run.
Western Illinois is back in action this week with five games, including four at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The Leathernecks open the week at home on Tuesday against Bradley before traveling to Illinois State on Wednesday. WIU wraps up the week by welcoming all Western Illinois Baseball Alumni back for alumni weekend against Little Rock.
