Western Takes Loss to SEMO, Swept in Series

| By:

The Leathernecks lost 8-1 to SEMO on Saturday.

Box Score CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - Western looked to get back on track on Saturday with a win, but the Redhawks took a first-inning lead and SEMO never trailed as the second-place Redhawks won 8-1.

SEMO jumped out to a two-run lead in the first on Leatherneck starter Emily Price. She then forced a one-two-three inning in the second to keep the Redhawks at bay. In the third, SEMO scored one run on two hits to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Western got their first hit of the game in the fourth when Bella Alvarez slapped a single to right field. After advancing to second on a groundout, Megan Leonard hit an RBI single to left field, reducing the Skyhawk lead to three. Unfortunately for Western, Leonard's fourth-inning hit was their final one of the game.

Kathryn McChristy entered for Price in the fourth, and after allowing a single, Kaylee Ketcherside made a spectacular grab to prevent an extra-base hit. SEMO got one back in the frame to make it a 5-1 game. The Skyhawks scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to increase their lead to seven. Western did not have a baserunner in the final three innings of action.

Western will attempt to break their eleven-game losing streak on Tuesday at 3 PM when they host Kansas City. After that standalone non-conference game, Western welcomes Southern Indiana to town on May 4-5 to close out the season, with senior day coming on May 5.
