Western Illinois Drops Sunday's Rubber Match

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois baseball team fell to Morehead State on Sunday afternoon in the rubber match. Eight runs by the Eagles in the first two innings pushed them to a 16-5 win. WIU moves to 7-23 and 3-9 in Ohio Valley play.

Western Illinois fell into an early hole as Morehead State struck for five runs in the first inning and three in the second, giving themselves an 8-0 lead. Western Illinois found its way on the scoreboard in the third inning as Cesar Franco hit his first home run of the weekend, and the Leathernecks cut the deficit down to 8-1.

Morehead struck for a run in the bottom of the third and fourth as they increased their lead to eight at 10-1. Western Illinois used the home run ball once again in the fifth inning. J.R. Heavilin started the inning with a single up the middle, and Brock Lummus followed with a single of his own. Kyree Alexander brought everyone in with a three-run home run to right field as WIU cut the Eagles lead to six (10-4).

Morehead State broke the game open at the bottom of the sixth with a six-run inning, leading 16-4. Western Illinois added a run in the seventh as Brock Lummus started the inning with a single. He then advanced around the bases on three consecutive wild pitches by Morehead State.

Brock Lummus led the Leatherneck's offense, scoring two runs and going 3-3 at the plate well. Lummus also reached base via a hit-by-pitch. Trevor Leon had a multiple-hit day, collecting two hits in his four at-bats. Cesar Franco and Kyree Alexander both went deep in the series finale.
