About the Opponents:
WIU will have to cram seven games into five days, playing four different opponents. They start the week with a doubleheader against Mississippi Valley State, who has started 1-6 on the year. Then, the Leathernecks head to Murray, Kentucky for the 2024 Velvet Milkman Classic, a multi-team event that will see Western Illinois play five games in three days. Here, they will play the hosts, Murray State, twice, who has started 3-7 in 2023. A Toledo squad that has only played three games going into the Velvet Milkman Classic, will face off against Western twice this weekend. The Rockets are 2-1 heading into the tournament. WIU will also take on an IUPUI squad that has lost eight straight going into the tournament.

Eight Games In:
The Leathernecks have started 2-6, picking up a win against a solid Northern Iowa squad in the UNI-Dome, before winning one in a three-game series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Leathernecks picked up a 9-5 win in Pine Bluff, highlighted by five different players having a multi-hit game.

Players to Watch:
Gabriela Drager went 5-9 with a double over the series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, stealing two bases as well. Freshman shortstop and lead-off hitter Sophia Sanchez had an excellent game in the win against UAPB, going 3-5 at the plate, scoring two runs, and knocking one in. Veteran pitcher Emily Price threw eleven innings over the series, tallying 14 strikeouts.

What's Next for Western:
Coming up, WIU will face off against Green Bay and Bellarmine twice each in St. Charles, MO, in a tournament hosted by new conference mate Lindenwood. The tournament runs March 2-3. Then, the Leathernecks start OVC play at UT-Martin the following weekend.
