Leathernecks Fall to First-Place Little Rock

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University Women's Soccer had picked up results in their two previous matches, beating SEMO and drawing SIUE before Sunday's matchup with the Trojans, who entered the match tied for first place with Lindenwood. A defensive affair, WIU played an even match with the Trojans, but let one goal in that ended up being the only goal of the match.

WIU played a solid match against the Trojans, as the Leatherneck defense was particularly stout on the afternoon. Despite being outshot 18-8, the WIU back line of Rita Moran, Ali Matthews, and Hilary Halpin played well as all three went the full 90. Rachel Balinao and Hana Daoudi manned the outside of the pitch for the full 90 as well, as both could control possession and help start attacks from wide positions for the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois was outshot 10-2 in a period that the Leathernecks held a lot of possession in, but as has been a theme of the season, were unable to create a lot of chances for themselves. Midfielder Aofie Boulter had a few shots from long-distance that looked good but missed high or wide throughout the match.

Leatherneck keeper Ariel Bernard saved seven shots in the match, but let one in in the back of the net in the 60th minute as Little Rock played a long ball up to their star forward Candice Kilderry, who put it in the back of the net. Kilderry leads the team in goals on the season with five.

With the win and some help from SEMO, as they drew Lindenwood on Sunday afternoon, Little Rock now stands alone in first place with 10 points in four matches.

WIU sits in eighth place with four points, with a big week ahead as the Leathernecks take on Eastern Illinois in Charleston on Sunday.
