Western Illinois Drops Away Match to Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Western Illinois University Men's Soccer looked to build on its big home win over Liberty on Thursday. Despite dropping their first three matches in conference play, the Leathernecks picked up a massive three points at John MacKenzie Alumni Field as they beat the Flames one-nil. WIU looked to take that momentum into Sunday's matchup, but a very slow match saw the Lions get a late penalty and convert it for a one-nil victory.

The first half was extremely slow with no key plays or moments, the two teams combined for three shots, none on goal. Lindenwood had a good chance in the 14th minute, taking a shot from inside the box, but Ethan Blake's attempt shot 20+ feet over the bar.

In the second, the slow pace continued for both teams. Western's first shot on goal of the game was a 30-yard try from Ty Duax that Lindenwood's keeper easily picked up. Lindenwood's offense started to make things a little interesting about 10 minutes into the second half, getting some chances, but the Leatherneck defense looked strong. Senior captain Joel McIntyre made a great goal-line clearance and Micah Ramirez had a couple solid saves as well.

Ramirez made a great save in the 81st to deflect out a shot, but Leevi Swearengen fouled a Lion player in the box, giving Lindenwood a penalty kick. Ethan Blake converted the penalty for Lindenwood and that sealed the match for the Lions, as WIU didn't get a good chance in the final ten.

Next week, Western Illinois Men's Soccer hosts a pair of important matches at John MacKenzie, taking on Southern Indiana on Wednesday before in-state rival EIU comes to town on Sunday afternoon.
