Strong Second Half Propels WIU Win Over Lindenwood

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois's strong second half propelled them to a 74-58 victory over the Lindenwood Lions. WIU moves to 2-1 in Ohio. Valley Conference play and 11-3 overall.

In a back-and-forth first quarter, Allie Meadows started the scoring with a layup just a minute into the match. WIU quickly responded, using Raegan McCowan and Addi Brownfield baskets to take a 6-3 lead with 6:36 remaining in the quarter. The teams continued to trade baskets, and Brownfield's two free throws put WIU back in front at 10-9. However, WIU was held scoreless for the rest of the quarter, allowing Lindenwood to take a 14-10 lead after one.

The second quarter saw a resurgence from the Leathernecks, with their offense coming out hot. A quick 6-0 run, fueled by baskets from Kaylen Reed and Anna Deets and free throws from Alissa Dins and Brownfield, helped WIU reclaim a 16-14 lead. Allie Meadows then hit a step-back three-pointer, giving WIU a 24-22 advantage, and assisted on a Dins basket to extend the lead to 26-22. The teams traded baskets, and WIU went into halftime with a 29-25 lead.

Coming out of the break, WIU continued their strong performance with a 10-0 run, pushing their lead to 42-27. Deets, McCowan, and Jasmine Nichols, contributed to this run, with WIU showcasing a well-rounded offense. Despite Lindenwood cutting the lead to eight, Mallory McDermott's mid-range jump shot pushed the lead back to double digits at 46-36. Carla Flores then added to the lead with one of her four three-pointers, and McDermott's buzzer-beater concluded the third quarter with WIU leading 55-41.

WIU maintained their momentum in the fourth quarter, embarking on a 9-0 run highlighted by two three-pointers from Carla Flores, extending their lead to 64-43 with 8:03 left. The Leathernecks continued to dominate, holding a 20-point lead under the game's final five minutes. Although Lindenwood managed to cut the deficit to 14 points at 71-57, WIU responded, securing a 74-58 victory and maintaining their 16-point lead by the final horn.

Addi Brownfield was the game's leading scorer with an impressive 19 points, showcasing her offensive prowess. Carla Flores contributed 15 points, connecting on 4 out of 6 three-point attempts. Raegan McCowan narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Alissa Dins had a well-rounded performance with 3 points, four rebounds, and two assists in her return to action. WIU's balanced scoring and strong defensive efforts ultimately secured their victory in a compelling matchup.

WIU hits the road for their next two match ups, traveling to UT Martin on Thursday (Jan. 11) and Eastern Illinois (Jan. 13).
