WIU Falls at Home to SEMO

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell for the first time inside Western Hall to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks on Thursday night. The 72-66 loss moves WIU to 1-1 in OVC and 10-3 overall. 

The first quarter kicked off with Raegan McCowan showcasing her scoring prowess by contributing to the Leathernecks' initial four points. Despite her efforts, WIU trailed 6-4 with 7:40 left. Mallory McDermott, however, interrupted SEMO's momentum with a clutch three-pointer. McDermott continued to be a key player, cutting the deficit to six with another three and adding two points from the free-throw line, reducing the gap to four at 18-14. SEMO extended their lead to 23-14 by the end of the first quarter.

SEMO's dominance persisted in the second quarter, reaching their largest lead at 15 points (32-17) with 6:55 left. Despite trailing 38-25, WIU mounted a comeback with McCowan and Anna Deets leading the charge. The duo managed to cut the lead to 10 (38-28) with an 8-0 run to end the half, leaving WIU down by six at 38-32.

The Leathernecks continued their resurgence in the third quarter, with Jasmine Nichols and Anna Deets hitting back-to-back shots to bring the deficit down to five (42-37). WIU battled fiercely, with Addi Brownfield's free throw reducing the gap to a single possession. Raegan McCowan's standout performance became more apparent as she scored a layup and a free throw, making it a 55-53 game. SEMO, however, responded to each WIU surge, maintaining a six-point lead.

As the game approached its climax, WIU cut the lead down to one (67-66) with less than a minute to play. Despite their efforts, SEMO secured a 72-66 victory. Raegan McCowan emerged as the leading scorer with an impressive 21 points, securing a double-double with 13 rebounds. Addi Brownfield contributed significantly with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Mallory McDermott added 11 crucial points coming off the bench. Anna Deets maintained her scoring consistency with 12 points for the second consecutive game.

WIU is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 6) when they welcome the Lions of Lindenwood to Western Hall.
