WIU Falls Late Against EIU

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois fell to instate rival Eastern Illinois on Saturday afternoon inside Grongier Arena. The 72-63 loss moves WIU to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

The first quarter kicked off with Raegan McCowan making an impact early on, scoring a three-pointer for the Leathernecks. Addi Brownfield went on a 5-0 run as the first quarter progressed, giving WIU a narrow lead of 8-7. The lead exchanged hands several times throughout the quarter, with baskets from Allie Meadows and a crucial three-pointer by Mallory McDermott helping WIU secure a 13-10 lead. Alissa Dins' two free throws capped off a 7-0 run for WIU, but EIU responded with a 5-0 run of their own, tying the game at 15 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw WIU starting strong, with Meadows hitting a quick three-pointer to regain the lead at 18-15. A layup by Jasmine Nichols and a fast-break layup by McDermott extended WIU's lead to 22-17. McCowan then went on an impressive scoring streak, contributing ten consecutive points over three minutes, leading WIU to their largest lead of the game at 32-22. Despite EIU's efforts to narrow the deficit, WIU maintained control, heading into halftime with a 34-26 lead.

The third quarter saw WIU extend their lead further, with Anna Deets burying a three-pointer early. The Leathernecks' defense held strong, preventing EIU from getting within seven points. Deets added another three-pointer, and McCowan's layup helped WIU stay in control with a 44-41 lead heading into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter proved a fierce battle, with both teams trading leads in the opening minutes. Addi Brownfield's free throw brought WIU within one at 49-48, but McCowan responded to an EIU three-pointer with one of her own, keeping the deficit at one point (52-51). However, EIU's offense surged ahead, securing a 71-62 victory.

Despite the loss, Raegan McCowan showcased an outstanding performance, leading all scorers with 22 points. Allie Meadows and Addi Brownfield also contributed with double-digit points ten, and Alissa Dins led WIU in rebounds with seven. 

Western Illinois returns home next week as they battle Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon.
