Leathernecks Fall on the Road to UT Martin

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's basketball team fell on the road to UT Martin on Thursday night. The Leathernecks battled tough, but the Skyhawks took the 68-49 victory. WIU moves to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in OVC play.

A slow offensive start by both teams saw Western Illinois score the first basket of the game through Anna Deets with 7:48 left in the first quarter. Deets played a significant role in extending Western Illinois' lead, contributing to a four-point advantage (6-2) with a layup off an assist from Addi Brownfield. UT Martin fought back, taking an 11-8 lead before Addi Brownfield answered with three straight points, ending the first quarter tied at 11.

As the second quarter unfolded, UT Martin initiated a 4-0 run, but Brownfield responded by leading Western Illinois in a 7-2 run, including a crucial three-pointer that gave WIU an 18-17 lead with 5:35 left in the half. However, UT Martin again countered with a mini 4-0 run. Despite the back-and-forth, the first half concluded for WIU with Anna Deets making a fast break layup, leaving Western Illinois trailing 28-24.

The third quarter opened with a UT Martin opening 7-0 run, giving Western Illinois their largest deficit of the game at 35-26. Undeterred, Western Illinois fought back with a 10-0 run, initiated by Raegan McCowan's jump shot and Allie Meadows' deep three-pointer, reducing the deficit to 35-31. Brownfield's aggressive play brought WIU within two points (35-33) on a fast break layup, and a three-pointer by Anna Deets gave the Leathernecks a 36-35 lead.UT Martin responded with a 13-2 run, establishing a 48-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Skyhawks brought the Leatherneck deficit above 20 multiple times in the fourth quarter, but Jasmine Nichols and Lily Randgaard found a pair of baskets to bring the final score down to 69-48.

Western Illinois had three scorers in double digits. Addi Brownfield led the team with 12 points and five rebounds, while Anna Deets contributed 11 points on 5-13 shooting. Raegan McCowan maintained her double-figure streak with 10 points and four rebounds. Alissa Dins led the team with seven rebounds, showcasing the team's collective effort in both scoring and rebounding.
