Western Heads North For Pair of Road Matches

The Leathernecks Will Take On Loyola (Thu. Aug. 31 @ 7 PM) and Milwaukee (Sun. Sept. 3 @ 1 PM) this weekend.

Previous matchup: The Leathernecks and Loyola Chicago Ramblers have squared off 3 times, dating back to 2013. WIU holds a 0-2-1 record against Loyola, with the draw coming in the first matchup in 2013. In last year's matchup, Loyola won 4-1 in Macomb, in a match that saw the Ramblers score thrice in the final 15 minutes. 
The Milwaukee Panthers and Western have played 9 matches, and the Panthers boast a 8-0-1 record against the Leathernecks. The tie came last year, ending an 8-match win streak that the Panthers have held over Western since 1997. Milwaukee's historical dominance really shines through when looking at goal differential, as the Panthers have scored 40 goals in 9 matchups, while the Leathernecks have just one. 

Scouting the opponents: So far, Loyola has a 1-3 record in the 2023 season. Their three losses have come against Illinois, Kansas, and most recently Bowling Green this past Sunday. Their lone win came against Toledo on Aug. 25, a 2-1 effort from the Ramblers. In 2022, Loyola finished with a 8-8-3 record, placing 8th in the A10 Conference. 
Milwaukee holds a 2-0-2 record going into Thursday's matchup with Arkansas. Milwaukee was picked first in the Horizon League preseason poll this year, recieving 10 out of 11 first-place votes. They opened the season with a draw at #3 Notre Dame, followed by wins against SIUE and Minnesota. Most recently, the Panthers tied 3-3 against Denver on Sunday. 

So far this season: Western has a 1-1-1 record on the season, as they beat Chicago State on the road, and most recently drew with Northern Iowa in a match at Macomb High. 

Players to watch: Emmy Ellington, Malerie Rohweder, and Isabel Navas Rodriguez have all played every minute of all three games so far for the Leathernecks. Rodriguez was named OVC co-goalkeeper last week, thanks to her shutout of Chicago State. Junior transfer Sachiko Gamo has scored the lone goal for the Leathernecks this season. 

What's next:  Western will be back at home on Thursday, Sep. 7 with a match against Green Bay, then head to Normal for a match with the Illinois State Redbirds on Sunday, Sep. 10 at 1 PM
