Leathernecks Rally Comes Up Short Against SDSU

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Baseball team fell 8-6 in the rubber match against South Dakota State on Sunday (Apr. 9) afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

The Jackrabbits jumped on the scoreboard first as they would plate two runs in the top of the second inning. WIU would respond in the bottom half of the inning. Jack Sievers would draw a two-out walk before Max Slavens would rip a double down the right-field line. SDSU's right fielder would bobble the ball in the outfield, allowing Sievers to score from third.

Western Illinois would jump in front in the 4th inning. Adam Juran would lead off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Juran would get hit by a pitch three times in the afternoon. With Juran at first, Sievers would produce. The fifth-year senior would send the ball halfway up the trees in the left center, giving WIU a 3-2 lead. WIU would keep threatening in the bottom of the 4th as Slavens would single, and Derek Botaletto would have a two-out walk, but WIU would not increase their lead.

SDSU would jump back in front with six unanswered runs over the next four innings, giving them an 8-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. Western Illinois would spark a little rally in the bottom of the 9th. The Leathernecks would load the bases from a hit-by-pitch, error, and walk, setting the table for Juran. Juran would battle in an at-bat that would see him take a ball straight in the back bringing home a run. Sievers would keep the train moving with an RBI single to right field. Slavens would draw a walk, walking in another run bringing the deficit to two runs (8-6). Derek Botaletto would line a ball into the right-center gap, but SDSU would make a diving play to end the ball game.

Western Illinois hitters would again be patient at the plate as they would draw 14 free passes. WIU would total six base hits on the afternoon, with Jake Allgeyer, Jack Sievers, and Max Slavens having two. J.R. Heavilin had the lone stolen base for WIU.

WIU returns to non-conference play next week as they travel to Eastern Illinois on Wednesday (Apr. 12) and Michigan State over the weekend.
