WIU Softball Falls on Final Day of Black & Yellow Challenge

Team took No. 25 Wichita State to extra innings but fell, heads to Tennessee next weekend.

WICHITA, Kan. – Western Illinois softball played on Sunday (March 5), facing Bradley and Wichita State in back-to-back games, dropping both. The result moves Western Illinois' season record to 6-11 with a long road trip through Tennessee slated to begin later this week.

Game 1: Braves 6, Leathernecks 2
The Leathernecks wasted no time, opening the game's scoring in the top of the first. Kaylee Ketcherside led things off with an infield single and advanced to second on a ground-out, then two at-bats later when Gabriela Drager singled, putting Western ahead 1-0 entering the bottom half of the inning. Bradley countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning and added three more in the third, taking a 6-1 lead with four innings to play.

Western cut into the Braves' lead in the sixth. With runners on the corners, Megan Leonard hit a sacrifice fly to left field that saw Drager score and Bella Alvarez advance to third on the throw. Despite the momentum, Western was unable to score any more runners and the game went final at 6-2.

Ketcherside, Drager, Alvarez and Leonard combined for four hits with Drager, Georgia Rea and Malorie Gill finding getting on with bases on balls. WIU had three pitchers appear in the circle as Kathryn McChristy started and threw two innings before being replaced by Savannah Rodriguez, who threw three innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five. Sophia Honse came on for the final inning, allowing no hits.

Game 2: No. 25 Wichita State 2, Western Illinois 1 (8 inn.)
For the second-straight game, it was Western Illinois who opened the scoring early – this time off the bat of Bella Alvarez. Leading off the second inning, Alvarez got ahold of the Shockers' pitch and hit a bomb to left field, a solo shot that was her second home run of the season to put Western ahead 1-0.

The lead lasted until the fifth inning, when Wichita State used a no-out double to tie the game at one and put multiple runners on base. However, Emily Price was able to get out of the jam and keep the game level at one. Western Illinois looked to create some momentum in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but was unable to convert and the game went into the seventh level at one.

The Shockers put a runner on third with two outs but Emily Price once again kept the team out of danger, and the game went into extra innings. After Western was held scoreless in the top half of the eighth, Wichita State used an RBI double to seal a 2-1 final result.

Western Illinois finished with one run on five hits as Price threw the entire game and allowed six hits, two runs (both earned) and one walk while striking out five Shocker hitters. Rylee Boone, Megan Leonard, Cynthia Hull along with Drager and Alvarez recorded hits as Riley Eagan found her way on base with a hit by pitch.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Friday (March. 10), opening the Middle Tennessee State University Invitational with a 9 a.m. contest against Green Bay.
