WIU Softball Falls at Tennessee Tech

Leathernecks turn it around quickly, face Murray State at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Western Illinois softball was in action Tuesday afternoon (March 14), falling in both games to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. The Leathernecks will turn it around quickly, facing Murray State on Wednesday (March 15) in Murray, Ky., for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.

Game 1: Golden Eagles 4, Leathernecks 3
Both offenses were quiet early in game one, as a solo home run by Tennessee Tech accounted for the only run through the first four innings. In the fifth, however, Western Illinois opened things up off the bat of Bella Alvarez. After Kayla DePoorter reached first on a wild pitch, Malorie Gill came in as a pinch runner and advanced to second after Megan Leonard laid down a sacrifice bunt. Then, with one out, Bella Alvarez stepped up with a single to center field, recording her eighth RBI of the season and tying the game at one apiece.

Though the hosts countered with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, Western once again countered with more offense. With Alivia Beard on first as a pinch runner after Savannah Rodriguez singled, Georgia Rea on second after a single and Piper Foote on first after getting hit by a pitch, Gill came up with a two-RBI single down the left field line to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run advantage, 3-2, in the top of the sixth.

TTU would score two on a sixth-inning single before closing things out in the seventh to secure a game-one victory.

Rea finished a perfect 3-3 with one run scored, setting a new career-high for hits in a single game, as Alvarez finished 2-4 with the RBI single and a double in the first inning. Kaylee Ketcherside used a second inning single to finish 1-3 while Foote's hit-by-pitch was her fifth of the season – good for second-most among Summit League hitters. In the circle, Emily Price started and went the distance, allowing seven hits and four runs (four earned) while walking four and striking out four of the 31 batters she faced.

Game 2: Tennessee Tech 6, Western Illinois 3
Unlike the first game, game two saw runners cross home plate early with a combined total of three runs in the first inning. Western was able to take an early lead on the game's fourth at-bat, as Savannah Rodriguez singled to center to drive in Alvarez, who had walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tennessee Tech would counter with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage after six outs of action.

The Golden Eagles looked to put more runs on the board in the fourth inning with runners at second and third after a sacrifice play, but Rodriguez, who started in the circle, struck out the next two batters to prevent the score from changing. Both teams continued to battle but neither scored in innings two through six, setting the stage for a closely-contested seventh inning.

Once in the seventh, Western Illinois had several players step up with clutch hits to regain the lead. With two outs, Jorja Hudson singled to left before Alivia Beard came on to pinch run; Gabriela Drager then singled up the middle to put runners on first and second and Alvarez singled in the game-tying run. In the next at bat, Maria Luna hit yet another single to score Drager and secure a 3-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the inning.

Tennessee Tech hit a walk-off grand slam with two outs to seal the 6-3 result.

Hudson finished with a team-high two hits as the Leathernecks finished with three total runs on eight hits and one walk. Rodriguez threw the entire game, finishing with 6.2 innings pitched and allowing seven hits, six runs (six earned) and one walk while striking out seven Golden Eagle hitters.

The Leathernecks are back in action Wednesday afternoon (March 15), facing Murray State on the road at 3 p.m.
