Leathernecks Fall in Single Game at Murray State

WIU got on base with three hits and one walk, Murray State secured the result with a first-inning home run.

MURRAY, Ky. – Western Illinois softball played Wednesday afternoon (March 15), falling 2-0 to the Murray State Racers at Racer Field. The result comes eight games into the team's spring break road trip with a home on the horizon, as SIUE is set to visit Mary Ellen McKee Stadium next Wednesday (March 22).

After generating three runs in both games yesterday, Western's offense was quiet against Murray State, using three runs and a base on balls to generate four runners in the game. Maria Luna singled up the middle in the first while Cynthia Hull's second inning walk was the only one in the game for Western; Savannah Rodriguez and Kaylee Ketcherside both singled in the fourth to put runners on first and second but WIU was unable to convert and didn't record a hit the rest of the game.

Murray State produced both of its runs on a two-run home run in the first inning.

Rodriguez started in the circle and pitched the first four innings, allowing five hits and two runs (both earned) while striking out five of the 20 batters she faced. Emily Price came on in relief for the final two innings and struck out two while allowing just one hit.

Leatherneck softball returns home next week, facing SIUE at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
