WIU Softball Drops Saturday Matchups

Both games finished within one run, Leathernecks conclude the tournament with one game on Sunday.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Western Illinois softball played in the second day of this year's Chattanooga Challenge on Saturday (Feb. 18), falling 4-5 in both games against Maine and the tournament hosts. WIU will conclude the tournament with one matchup tomorrow against Marshall, set to begin play at 8 a.m. CT.

Game 1: Black Bears 5, Leathernecks 4 (F/8)
The second go around against Maine was a close one that ended with a combined nine runs and needed an extra inning of play. The Black Bears opened things up with two runs in the first but Western Illinois quickly leveled it, loading the bases in the second and scoring two runs. Piper Foote was hit by a pitch to send the first one across home plate before Kaylee Ketcherside hit an infield single to level the game at two.

After Maine hit an RBI single in the fourth to take a 3-2 advantage, Western Illinois once again responded – this time off the bat of Savannah Rodriguez. With Alivia Beard on first base thanks to a lead off walk, Rodriguez got ahold of the incoming pitch and sent it over the wall in left-center to put Western Illinois back in the lead at 4-3. Maine would score on a fifth-inning bunt to even the game at four, setting the stage for a close finish.

Once in extra innings, Western Illinois was able to load the bases in the top of the eighth but was unable to convert, and Maine scored on an error in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 victory.

Rodriguez finished 3-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, also pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one hit with no earned runs while striking out five opposing hitters. Emily Price, who started in the circle, went four innings and gave up seven hits, four earned runs and finished with four strikeouts.

Georgia Rea joined Rodriguez in the multi-hit club with a 2-4 effort, while Kaylee Ketcherside (1-3 with an RBI) and Bella Alvarez (1-4 with one run scored) added to the team's seven total hits. Alivia Beard and Maria Luna both got with one walk apiece, while Piper Foote's bases loaded hit-by-pitch accounted for her second RBI of the season.

Game 2: Chattanooga 5, Western Illinois 4
Tournament hosts Chattanooga got out to an early lead in Western's second game of the day, scoring one in the first inning off a WIU error before hitting a three-run shot to build a 4-0 advantage in the second.

That lead didn't last long, however, as Western Illinois sent four runners across the plate in the third inning alone to level the score. Maria Luna stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and drove in both Kayla Zamora and Georgia Rea with a single through the left side; Luna advanced to second base on the throw. In the next at-bat, Rodriguez came up with a sacrifice fly to deep left field that saw Gabriela Drager score and Luna move to third, setting the stage for another sacrifice fly – this time by Jorja Hudson – that tied the game at four.

The Mocs came back and looked dangerous in the bottom half of the fifth, loading up the bases with just one out. Emily Price stepped up in a major way, however, getting Chattanooga's next hitter to fly out on the infield before catching the next batter looking with another strikeout. After five innings of play, the game was still level at four apiece.

Chattanooga hit a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the sixth that put the Mocs ahead by one run and Western wasn't able to score in the seventh; the game went final at 5-4 in favor of the Mocs.

Kathryn McChristy started and pitched the first 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs before Emily Price came on in relief. Price finished the game with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six opposing hitters. Drager finished the game 2-4 with one run scored and combined with Rea (1-3, one run scored), Luna (1-3, two RBIs and one base on balls), Malorie Gill (1-3, one base on balls) and Piper Foote (1-3) for six hits, while four Western Illinois hitters earned their way on with bases on balls.

Western Illinois is set to conclude the tournament with one game tomorrow, playing Marshall at 8 a.m. CT.
