WIU Drops Final Game in Chattanooga

Leathernecks face Lindenwood and Green Bay next weekend.

Box Score Chattanooga, Tenn. – Western Illinois softball played its final game of the 2023 Chattanooga Challenge on Sunday (Feb. 19), falling 14-1 to Marshall. The result moves Western Illinois to 4-5 on the season with games against Lindenwood and Green Bay slated for next weekend.
 
The Leathernecks broke things open early with a run in the top of the first. With Gabriela Drager and Maria Luna at first and third, Kaylee Ketcherside hit a single to left field for her fourth RBI of the season and second of the tournament. After the top half of the first, Western Illinois led, 1-0.
 
Marshall scored three runs in the first to take back the lead but the fourth inning would seal the game, as the Herd scored six runs to seal a 14-1 result.
 
Drager (1-3, one run scored) along with Ketcherside (1-2, one RB), Georgia Rea (1-3) and Cynthia Hull (1-1) combined for four hits, while Luna and Piper Foote got on base with walks. Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle and pitched 1.1 innings before Sophia Honse came in for 2.2 innings of relief, striking out one.
 
Sunday's contest concludes this weekend's tournament, which saw the Leathernecks play four games in three days. After an 8-1 loss to Maine on Friday, Western played two close ones on Saturday, falling 5-4 in extra innings to Maine and then 5-4 to tournament hosts Chattanooga.  
 
Western Illinois is back in action next weekend, traveling to St. Charles, Mo., to play two games apiece against Lindenwood and Green Bay.
