Rodriguez Named Co-Pitcher of the Week

| By:

She’s the first WIU pitcher since Abby Carlin on Feb. 22, 2021, to earn recognition from the Summit League.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Western Illinois softball pitcher Savannah Rodriguez has been named TicketSmarter Co-Peak Pitcher of the Week, league officials announced on Monday (Feb. 13). Rodriguez helped lead the team to a 4-1 record and threw the first Western Illinois perfect game in over 20 years.

Her weekend began with a start in the very first game of the 2023 season, facing Detroit Mercy. The Titans sent 21 batters up to the plate and Rodriguez sat 21 down with just 88 pitches, striking out 12 to complete the fifth perfect game in program history; she joined Brenda Heyl, Veronica Wilson and Holly (Killion) Van Vlymen (twice) as the only players to ever throw a perfect game in a Western Illinois uniform.

After pitching 2.1 innings in Western's comeback victory over SLU on Saturday, Rodriguez started against Bowling Green on Sunday and threw another gem, pitching a complete-game shutout while allowing three hits and striking out 11 more opposing hitters. She finished the weekend 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched, allowing just six hits and one earned run while holding opposing hitters to a .111 average. Rodriguez's 12 strikeouts against Detroit Mercy also set a new career-best mark.

Western Illinois is heading to Chattanooga, Tenn., to play in a tournament hosted by Chattanooga this weekend. The action starts with games against Indiana State and Maine on Friday (Feb. 17), continues with another matchup against Maine and Chattanooga on Saturday (Feb. 18), and concludes with one final matchup against the tournament hosts on Sunday (Feb. 19).
