Logan Lommel one of six to receive OVC Scholar-Athlete Award for 2023-24

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Western Illinois track and field and cross country athlete Logan Lommel earned one of the Ohio Valley Conference's highest honors, being named one of six student-athletes to receive the prestigious Scholar-Athlete Award for 2023-24.

The award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes and is given annually to three men and three women student-athletes for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.

"I cannot express how happy I am to see Logan named an OVC Scholar-Athlete," Western Illinois Director of Athletics Paul A. Bubb said. "He is more than deserving and this is a great start for Western Illinois University in the Ohio Valley Conference."

The six winners were selected from a group of finalists by a vote of OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives.

"I am very proud to work at an institution that is helping to shape an incredible scholar-athlete like Logan," Western Illinois Faculty Athletics Representative Jeremy Robinett said. "In addition to excelling in multiple sports and events, he has demonstrated a commitment to serving others through community service in the Macomb-area and in his hometown. None of this was done at the expense of his commitment to academics; as one of his faculty nominators wrote, Logan is 'fiercely committed to his education.' He is an excellent representative of what it means to be a scholar-athlete and I'm very proud that he chose to be a Leatherneck."

Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.5 grade-point average and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC. The award is based on academic and athletic criteria/accomplishments achieved during the 2022-23 school year.

"Logan is an excellent representative of what it means to be a scholar athlete," said Western Illinois track and field and cross country head coach Trey Brokaw. "He excels in the classroom, in his sport, in community service, and in leadership. Logan has left a lasting legacy on our cross country and track & field programs, and that legacy is still being built. With two semesters left before his eligibility ends, Logan looks to expand on the six WIU school records he has already set. I look forward to seeing how well he can do with his remaining opportunities representing Western Illinois University and the Ohio Valley Conference."

Lommel competes for the Western Illinois cross country and track and field teams, focusing on the mile and 3000-meter steeplechase events in track and field. On the cross country course he established school records in the 8K and 10K during the 2022 season. Lommel is also on the school record 4x400 and 4x800 meter relay teams. On the track he is the WIU record holder in the 1500 meters and the steeplechase. The 10k and steeplechase records were two of the longest-held records in each cross country and track and field history, with the previous top times recorded in the 1970s.

In the classroom he earned a 3.938 undergraduate grade point average, graduating with a degree in History Education. He is currently working on a master's degree in history and has a 4.00 GPA in graduate courses. He has been named a History Department Scholar and was nominated as a WIU Lincoln Laureate. He is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and regularly volunteers at his local church.

Along with Lommel, the 2023-24 Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete winners are: Peyton Calitri of Tennessee Tech (baseball), Matea Diekema of SIUE (soccer), Dylan Mott of UT Martin (volleyball/beach volleyball), Ryley Preece of Morehead State (baseball) and Yao Giada Zhou of Tennessee Tech (soccer).
