MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois Athletics is proud to announce the department's new alternate identity, the Forgottonia 6-7ers, celebrating a unique and storied piece of West Central Illinois history. Beginning during the upcoming athletic calendar, select Leatherneck teams will compete under the 6-7ers identity, highlighting the heritage, humor, and regional pride tied to the legendary "Republic of Forgottonia."
The lore of the Republic of Forgottonia was born in the late 1960s in Macomb, Illinois—the heart of the movement. A group of concerned citizens coined the name "Forgottonia" as a satirical protest against the lack of state and federal investment in highways and infrastructure across a sixteen-county region of West Central Illinois.
"The story of Forgottonia captures the spirit of West Central Illinois: resourceful, proud, and not afraid to stand up for itself," said Western Illinois Director of Athletics Paul Bubb. "The Forgottonia 6-7ers identity allows us to celebrate the history of our region while connecting our teams and fans to a story that is uniquely ours."
While the original movement referenced sixteen counties, it was especially tied to the U.S. Route 67 corridor, a highway that became symbolic of the region's lack of development at the time. The "6-7ers" nickname pays homage to that corridor, which runs directly through the heart of Forgottonia and remains a central artery for communities across West Central Illinois.
Under the alternate identity, Western Illinois teams will wear specialized Forgottonia 6-7ers branding and uniforms, incorporating visual elements inspired by the folklore of the Republic of Forgottonia. Each of WIU's intercollegiate programs will compete as the Forgottonia 6-7ers at least once during the designated celebration period, with a full schedule of games and events to be announced at a later date.
The launch of the Forgottonia 6-7ers identity provides Western Illinois Athletics an opportunity to celebrate local history while creating a distinctive connection between the university and the communities it serves throughout West Central Illinois.
