Western Illinois Secures Coach Gravina's 300th Career Win with Victory

MACOMB, IL - On a historic night for Head Coach JD Gravina, Western Illinois celebrated their 6th win of the season and a significant milestone as Coach Gravina achieved his 300th career win. The Leathernecks displayed their prowess on the court with a commanding 86-72 victory over Chicago State inside Western Hall, marking their fifth consecutive victory and elevating their season record to an outstanding 6-1.

The game started with an electrifying performance from Anna Deets, who embarked on a personal 5-0 run and contributed seven of Western Illinois' first nine points. Carla Flores extended the lead with a three-pointer, pushing WIU to an 18-9 advantage with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. A fast-break layup by Addi Brownfield in the final minute solidified a 20-11 lead, setting the tone for the Leathernecks early.

Midway through the second quarter, Mallory McDermott's three-pointer and an Alissa Dins layup propelled Western Illinois to a comfortable 15-point lead. The offenses traded baskets, culminating in a buzzer-beater by Raegan McCowan, which sent the Leathernecks into halftime with a substantial 38-23 lead.

The second half commenced with a burst of energy from Western Illinois as they embarked on a 5-0 run, further solidifying their control of the game. Responding to Chicago State's attempts to rally with a 4-0 run, WIU countered with a 6-2 run, spearheaded by Allie Meadows, extending their lead to 51-29 with 6:18 left in the third quarter.

The Leathernecks concluded the third quarter in dominant fashion, embarking on a 13-5 run that propelled them to a commanding 68-40 lead. Four players contributed to the scoring spree, showcasing the team's depth and versatility.

Maintaining their resilience, the Leathernecks held firm at the start of the fourth quarter. Lily Rangaard's three-pointer kept the lead at 28 points (76-48). Despite Chicago State's late surge, cutting the lead down to 12, Rangaard's clutch three and two free throws by McDermott secured the 86-72 victory for Western Illinois.

Anna Deets led the scoring charts with 17 points, while Raegan McCowan contributed a well-rounded performance with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Carla Flores showcased her sharpshooting skills with 13 points, hitting all four of her three-point attempts.
