Leathernecks Fall in Close Match versus First-Place Tennessee Tech

Western took a tough 1-0 loss against the Golden Eagles in Cookeville

COOKEVILLE, TN -- Western looked to pick up their first OVC win on Sunday when the Leathernecks traveled to Cookeville to take on first-place Tennessee Tech. Tennessee Tech came into the match undefeated, with a 3-0-1 record. Tennessee Tech has had the most prolific offense in the OVC so far, as they've scored 13 goals in conference play, while no other side has managed to score even six goals. Western's defense, on the other hand, has also been one of the best units in the OVC before Sunday's match, as they ranked second in the conference with two goals allowed.

The Leathernecks fared well in the first half despite being outshot 17-1. Senior keeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez saved 8 shots in the first half as the Golden Eagles were relentlessly putting offensive pressure on the 'Necks. Rodriguez would finish with ten saves in the match. Western's defense held strong until the 36th minute, when the Golden Eagles got on the board to make it 1-0, a score that would hold until the final whistle.

After a first half goal from Tennessee Tech, Western would hold on strong throughout the rest of the match and not allow another. Western would not get many chances in the second half until very late in the match. The Leathernecks had a few chances in the final minutes, including a longshot by Emmy Ellington, but were unable to score. Western falls to 0-2-3 on the conference season.

Next week, the Leathernecks continue OVC action, with a home Thursday match against Eastern Illinois, followed by a Sunday matchup in Edwardsville with SIUE.
