Turnovers Plague Leathernecks in Loss at Omaha

Anna Deets recorded the first double-double of her career, Western Illinois faces Denver on Saturday.

OMAHA, Neb. – Leatherneck women's basketball played Thursday night (Jan. 5), falling in a matchup against the Omaha Mavericks in a matchup that finished 76-64 in favor of the hosts. Western Illinois moves to 6-10 on the season and faces Denver in its next game, scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
 
After a back-and-forth first quarter that saw the teams knotted up at 15 after 10 minutes of action, the Leathernecks scored 10 unanswered points in the second quarter – a period capped off by a Kennedy Flanagan layup off a feed from Elizabeth Lutz. Flanagan along with Anna Deets, Alissa Dins, and Elizabeth Lutz scored during a stretch that would finish as a 13-2 Western Illinois run as WIU forced two turnovers and held Omaha to 1-6 shooting to increase the advantage. Omaha buckets in the closing minute of the quarter made it 35-32 at the halftime break in favor of Western Illinois.
 
With another hot start early in the third, Western built its biggest lead of the game at 42-34 thanks to Alissa Dins' 2-2 effort at the line, but Omaha responded by out-scoring the Leathernecks 19-10 in the remaining six minutes of action to take a one-point lead into the final quarter. The Mavs carried that third quarter momentum into the closing minutes, holding WIU to 12 fourth quarter points and securing the 76-64 victory.
 
Anna Deets recorded the first double-double of her career with 16 points and 15 boards, shooting 3-7 from deep and 5-7 at the line in 31 minutes of action. Mallory McDermott finished in double-figures for the second time in her last three appearances with 11 points off the bench, shooting 4-7 from the field and 2-4 from three. Alissa Dins paired eight points with five rebounds and Jada Thorpe scored eight, while Addi Brownfield led the team in assists with four along with seven points and one steal. Kennedy Flanagan finished with five points, five rebounds, one block and one steal.
 
Western Illinois assisted on 12 of its 19 made field goals while draining seven triples and continuing to make shot after shot at the free throw line, making 19 of 23 attempts (82.6%). The Leathernecks won the battle for the boards, 39-35 (10-8 offensive), while scoring 24 in the paint and 11 second chance points. After finishing with just 19 turnovers in the last two games combined, WIU committed 20 turnovers against the Mavericks. The bench chipped in 28 points.
 
The Leathernecks are back in action this Saturday (Jan. 7), facing the Denver Pioneers. Tip off in Colorado is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
