Leathernecks Drop Road Game at Denver

Western Illinois is back in Macomb next week, hosting Oral Roberts and Kansas City.

Denver, Colo. – Western Illinois women's basketball played Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7), facing the Denver Pioneers in a game that finished as a 70-58 victory for the hosts. The Leathernecks move to 6-11 and 1-5 in Summit League play with 12 games remaining in the regular season.

The Pioneers came out firing on all cylinders, opening the game on a 19-4 run that was fueled by an efficient 4-5 shooting from deep. Mallory McDermott responded, however, by scoring five-straight in a quick 7-0 run to bring Western right back into it. After a euro-step layup by Kennedy Flanagan in the final seconds, it was Denver ahead by nine after 10 minutes of action. Both teams traded buckets early in the second but Western started to cut into the Pioneer lead thanks to another run, bringing it within six on a Jada Thorpe three pointer with 1:29 remaining in the half; Denver then finished the quarter by scoring six points in the final 54 seconds and took a 39-27 lead into the halftime break.

Western Illinois out-scored Denver during the third quarter, with six different players scoring points. Lily Randgaard ignited a late 7-2 run thanks to an and-one that came after a Jada Thorpe steal, as Kennedy Flanagan scored off a feed from Carla Flores with 1:21 remaining in the period to bring Western within seven at 44-51. After Alissa Dins scored on the first offensive possession of the fourth, Western Illinois was once again within six points, but Denver would hold off the Leathernecks to win, 70-58.

Mallory McDermott led the team in scoring with 13 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3PT, 3-4 FT), also tying a career-high with six rebounds. Jada Thorpe scored 11 off the WIU bench while Anna Deets paired nine points with seven boards. Kennedy Flanagan finished with six points and three rebounds, while Elizabeth Lutz scored five and dished out a team-leading four assists and accounting for three steals; Addi Brownfield had five points and Alissa Dins blocked the lone shot of the game for WIU.

Western Illinois struggled shooting the ball in this one, finishing at 32.3% from the field. The Leatherneck offense did play a clean game, finishing with just five turnovers to Denver's 16 and converting that into 12 points off turnovers, 13 on the fast break and 28 points in the paint. The bench accounted for 33 of WIU's 58 points.

The Leathernecks are back at home next week, hosting Oral Roberts (Jan. 12, 6 p.m.) and Kansas City (Jan. 14, 2 p.m.)
