WIU Takes Down Cross State Rival

WIU Beats EIU 3-0

CHARLESTON, Ill -For the first time since 2017, Western Illinois (2-5) and Eastern Illinois (2-5) restored their cross-state rivalry on the volleyball court. The Leathernecks took down the Panthers in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 25-16).

Set 1.
Set one saw both teams take some time to feel each other out. A back-and-forth game through the first ten points gave us a 5-5 stalemate. The Leathernecks would get the offense going. A 12-2 run would open up the match. Kennedy Bauer would have three kills to help WIU separate themselves. Eastern Illinois would try to claw their way back into the set, but an Elizabeth Ziegler kill would give WIU a set point. Grace Nichols would finish off, set number one with a kill as WIU would take it 25-22.

Set 2.
Set two saw Western Illinois jump out to an early 3-0 lead. EIU would respond with a 5-2 run to knot the match up at 5. After both teams traded the next six points, Aubrey Putman and Grace Nichols would get back-to-back kills to push WIU up two. After an attack error, Brittany Wulf would get a kill to force an Eastern Illinois timeout. After the timeout, EIU would go on a 5-2 run to take the 14-13 advantage. The Leathernecks would not trail for the rest of the set, taking set number two, 25-21.

Set 3
Set three saw a contested start. Both teams would trade the first 14 points of the set. WIU would slowly increase their lead to 10-7 before EIU would call a timeout. Ziegler and Putman would both have kills that pushed the advantage to five (16-11). EIU would call another timeout to try to slow down the WIU offense. Western would not be, phased as they would finish the match on a 9-5 run and take set three 25-16.

Aubrey Putman led the way with 11 kills on 25 attempts, Kennedy Bauer had seven kills, and Elizabeth Ziegler had 6. Maggie Craker and Jessie Connell both had double-doubles on the evening. Craker had 15 assists to go along with 13 digs. Connell had 12 assists with ten digs.
