WIU Falls in Conference Matchup

WIU falls in straight sets.

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois volleyball wrapped up their opening weekend of conference play, dropping their matchup with North Dakota State. WIU and NDSU battled all morning, with the visitors taking the match 3-0 (14-25, 18-25, 23-25).

SET 1.
North Dakota State opened on the front foot, starting the first set with a 6-1 run. Brittany Wulf and Grace Kremer had a response with back-to-back kills to make it a 6-4 game. With a score of 9-7, the Bison would gain the space they needed. A 5-1 run would push them to a 13-8 lead. Both teams would trade points before NDSU would go on an 8-1 run to end the set.

SET 2.
Set two would see the Leathernecks jump out in front early. Kills by Elizabeth Ziegler, Aubrey Putman, and Brittany Wulf, along with three attack errors by NDSU, would give WIU the early 6-2 lead. The Bison responded with a 6-2 run of their own to tie the match at eight. With Both teams deadlocked, NDSU would use a 7-1 run and pull out in front 18-12. North Dakota State held off WIU the rest of the set as they took it 25-18.

SET 3.
Set three, a lot, like the first, saw the visitors jump out in front early. With NDSU out in front 3-0, Kennedy Bauer got her first kill of the set. Followed by a Wulf ace, WIU had cut the deficit down to one point. Both teams would trade points till the score was 7-6. NDSU would use another 9-2 run to pull out in front (16-8). This time WIU had an answer, an 8-3 run sparked by two Putman and two Kremer kills brought WIU within three (19-16). Down by four, WIU used a 6-2 to bring things back to a one-point game. That run forced an NDSU timeout. After the timeout, NDSU would get the final point they needed as they would take the third set.

Grace Kremer had five block assists to go along with her three kills. Karli Wenzel led the team with 15 digs. Maggie Craker also had a double-double with 22 assists and ten digs.
