Three Leathernecks with Double Digit Kills in Loss

WIU falls to Kansas City 3-1

KANSAS CITY, MO – Three Leathernecks finish with double-digit kills as Western Illinois (4-11, 0-3) loses to Kansas City (4-11, 1-1) on Tuesday (Sept. 27) evening. The Leathernecks fell to the Roo's on the road 3-1 (21-25, 11 -25, 28-26, 19-25).

SET 1
The first set saw both teams struggle for control early. With Kansas City ahead 8-6, WIU sparked a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the set. Back-to-back kills from Aubrey Putman and Brittany Wulf helped propel the 3-0 run into a 9-8 advantage. The opposition would not be behind for long as Kansas City would pull back ahead in the middle of set one. Down 21-16, WIU would use a timeout to regroup. After the break, Western Illinois would spark a 3-0 run that included two Putman kills. Putman would try to keep the Leathernecks close as she would get her final kill of the set to make it a 23-21 score. The Roos would eventually hold off WIU to take set one. Putman had six of her 12 kills in set one.

SET 2
Set two was a tight affair to start. With Kansas City up 2-0, two offensive mistakes would help the Leathernecks tie the matchup. With the score 3-3, the Roo's would use a 10-1 run to pull out in front for good. The Roos would take the second set 25-11.

SET 3
Set three saw Western Illinois get out in front early. The Leathernecks would use mistakes by Kansas City and a kill by Brittany Wulf to take an early 3-1 lead. At 6-6, WIU would use two more KC mistakes, and a Grace Kremer kill to pull out in front 9-6. WIU would hold on to the lead till Kansas City would tie it up at 15. The score was tied a total of 16 times in the third set. The Leathernecks would battle from behind and see their selves reclaim the lead with a Kansas City attack error (23-22). After a Grace Kremer kills gave WIU a set point, the Roos would get a kill to force extra points. Both teams would trade points to start before WIU would get a Kansas City service error, and a Kremer kills to take the set 28-26.

SET 4
Set four was another back-and-forth battle. Kansas City was not able to get any breathing room from WIU, as every time they tried to push out the lead, WIU came roaring back. Halfway through set four, Kansas City would have the lead 12-10. An attack error by KC and an Elizabeth Ziegler kill would tie the setup. With the score locked up at 14, KC would use a 5-1 run to pull out in front 19-15, forcing a WIU timeout. Out of the break, WIU was not able to get the big run, as they would fall in the final set 25-19.

Putman (12), Wulf (11), and Ziegler (10) all contributed with double-digit kills. Wulf and Putman also had double-digit digs with 11. For the third match in a row, Karli Wenzel contributed 15 digs. Maggie Cracker led the way with 23 assists. Julianna Schmidt and Ziegler both had two solo blocks. WIU as a team had a hitting percentage of .109. WIU had seven team blocks and two service aces.

Western Illinois will continue its three-game road trip as they head to Omaha for a clash with the Mavericks on Thursday (Sept. 29).
