Wulf Shines in Omaha

WIU Falls to Omaha 3-0

OMAHA, Neb – Western Illinois Volleyball team cannot climb out of an early deficit inside Baxter Arena as they fall to the Omaha Mavericks 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 23-25).

SET 1
Omaha came out early with a 6-0 run to start the match. After a service error, WIU got their first offensive point as Brittany Wulf slammed down her first of 16 kills in the match. After the opening run by the Mavericks, the Leathernecks would go on a 6-3 run to close the gap to three (9-6). Omaha would pull back away as they would use a 4-1 run in the middle of the set to lead by seven (19-12). Western Illinois would fight back. With the score 20-13, Wulf would have a kill and then a service ace to help WIU start a 4-0 run. Those two points were backed with two errors by the Mavericks to cut the deficit to 3 (20-17). Two more mistakes by the Mavericks brought the lead down to two (21-19). Omaha would regroup and finish the set on a 4-1 run to claim set one 25-20

SET 2
Set two saw a little more battle back and forth early. Both teams would be tied four times within the first 12 points. With the score 6-6, Omaha started to pull away. A 6-3 run brought it to a 12-9 lead. WIU would claw back into the match, cutting the deficit multiple times to one. Omaha would have the final run of the set as they would close the set on a 7-1 run to take set two 25-16.

SET 3
Western Illinois took full advantage of Omaha's mistakes early in set three. After a ball handling error, Aubrey Putman and Julianna Schmidt both had kills as WIU led 4-1. WIU would hold the lead for most of the beginning part of the third set. With Omaha ahead, 9-8, Wulf had three kills in a row to help WIU reclaim the lead (11-9). WIU would hold on to the lead till halfway through, when Omaha would reclaim it 16-15. The Leathernecks would tie the match up three more times until Omaha could finally pull ahead for good. 

Wulf led the way in kills tallying 16 hitting at .429. Ziegler added six kills well, Kennedy Bauer and Putman added five of their own. Karli Wenzel was the only Leatherneck in double digits in digs with 13. Jessie Connell dished out the most assists on the evening with 15. The Leathernecks hit a season-best .269 on attacks. The team had four service aces and three blocks.

The final stop on the three-game road trip for Western Illinois will be in Denver on Saturday (Oct. 1).
