Leathernecks drop road match at Fort Wayne

Sagir tallies goal for WIU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Western Illinois men's soccer team was able to grab an early lead, but a pair of goals by Purdue Fort Wayne late in the first half paved the way to the 2-1 win for the Dons on Fridat afternoon.

The Leathernecks (0-2) took an early 1-0 lead as Muaza Sagir tallied his first goal of the season. Sagir's blast from the top of the 18-yard box in the 12th minute gave Western Illinois its lone lead of the day. The Mastodons would control play the rest of the first half, outshooting Western Illinois 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes. Three of Fort Wayne's attempts would be on goal, with a pair finding the back of the net.

Seth Mahlmeister tied the score at 1-1 at the 33:20 mark, then less than three minutes later, the Dons took the lead for good as Luke Benford gave the home team a 2-1 advantage.

In the second half, Western Illinois did a better job being the aggressor, outshooting Fort Wayne 8-4, with four of the Leatherneck shots coming on net. Unfortunately for WIU, the squad never tallied the equalizer. Liam Gainey had a pair of shots on goal while Alex Flowers finished the match with a pair of saves. Western Illinois continues its road trip on Sunday, visiting IUPUI in a 3 p.m. kick. Western Illinois returns home to take on SIU-Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
