WIU Goes 0-2 Today at Purdue Fort Wayne Inivitational

WIU falls in twice.

Fort Wayne, Ind – Western Illinois Volleyball team dropped both of their matches in the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational on Saturday (Aug. 27). The Leathernecks and Canisius battled to a five-set thriller that Canisius won 3-2. WIU also fought hard in their final match against the host Purdue Fort Wayne dropping it three sets to one.
 
WIU VS Canisius
In a match with highs and lows, Canisius out-jousted Western to take the five-set victory. The opposition took the first set 25-17, but Western would roar back in set two. Led by Elizabeth Ziegler and Brittany Wulf, the Leathernecks would jump out to an 11-4 lead. Canisius would follow that up with a 10-3 run that would knot the game at 17. Both teams would trade points until a bad set would give Western Illinois an opportunity for set point. Maggie Craker would have one of her 15 assists in set two as she would find Ziegler for the kill. WIU would take the second set 26-24. The third set would start close. A 13-6 run by the Griffins would give them the 20-13 lead. WIU would try to claw their way back into the match, trimming the deficit to 3 (24-21). Canisius would eventually take the set 25-21. Set number four was all Western Illinois. The Leathernecks did not trail, getting out to an 11-3 lead. Canisius would trim it to a one-point deficit. Kills by Ziegler and Hailey Sperling would push the Western's lead out to 3. The Leathernecks would not look back. Taking, set four 25-22. The Leathernecks just ran out of gas. Canisius got ahead and controlled the set taking it 15-7.
 
WIU VS Purdue Fort Wayne
An old Summit League rivalry was restored on Saturday night as Purdue Fort Wayne beat Western Illinois three sets to one. All four sets were competitive, with them decided by a combined eight points. The Leathernecks got out to an early 5-2 lead, but the Mastodons would fight back and tie everything up at nine. The Mastodons would claim the lead after that and hold on to take set one 25-23. Set number two was a lot like the first set was, all Western in the beginning. The Leathernecks, led by Sperling's five kills, Western, jumped out to a 20-17 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne would stick around clawing back into the match and knotting the game up at 21-21. The teams would trade points, tieing it at 24-24. Purdue Fort Wayne would win the final two points and take set two 26-24. The third set of the evening was a set for the ages. The score was tied 21 times and nine lead changes helped propel Western Illinois to a 31-29 set match. Aubrey Putman led the way with four kills in the third set. Western Illinois would take a hold of set four, but a late run by Purdue Fort Wayne eventually helped them grab the 26-24 victory.
 
 
Putman led the offensive charge tallying 30 kills over the two matches. Ziegler was right behind her with 27 kills, and Grace Nichols had 18 kills on the night, including a team-high 15 against Purdue Fort Wayne. Jessie Connell and Maggie Craker led the way with assists. Connell had 32 against the Mastodons well Craker had 45 against Canisius. The Leathernecks as a team had 11 service aces throughout the two matches.
 
 
The Leathernecks will have the week off before they travel down to UT-Martin for the Sky Hawk Invitational on September 2-3.
