WIU Drops Opening Matches of Skyhawk Invitational

WIU takes on Alabama A&M tomorrow

MARTIN, Tenn - Western Illinois Volleyball team dropped their two opening matches in the Skyhawk Invitational on Friday (Sept. 2). Match one saw Western battle Arkansas State in a five-set match, with the Red Wolves taking three sets to two. Match two saw Western fight till the end as the host UT Martin won in straight sets.

WIU VS Arkansas State
Western Illinois opened up the Skyhawk Invitational by taking on the Red Wolves of Arkansas State. Western jumped out to a 7-5 lead after Elizabeth Ziegler helped spark an early 5-0 run in the first set. Arkansas State would regain the lead halfway through the set, taking a two-point advantage (17-15). Western would respond with a 10-3 run to end the first set that would give the Leathernecks the set 25-20 and an early 1-0 lead. The Red Wolves would respond in set two as they would hold control from the start winning 25-9, tying the match at 1-1. Set three, like the first, would see the Leathernecks jump ahead early. Hailey Sperling and Brittany Wulf would team up for two early kills to help Western lead 4-2. Both teams were unable to take advantage and pull ahead as the match would stay deadlocked till extra points. Jessie Connell and Wulf would go back-to-back with kills to give the Leathernecks a 28-26 set three victory. The fourth set saw a battle through the halfway point before the opposition pulled away with a 5-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. Western Illinois and a couple of errors on Arkansas State saw western down by just one (22-21). Down to its final point of the set, WIU went on a 4-0 run to take a 25-24 lead before dropping it in extra points (27-25). Set five saw the Leathernecks hold control till almost the very end. Up 12-10, ASU started a 5-0 run that would help them claim the match.

WIU VS UT Martin
The Leathernecks finished off day one of the Skyhawk Invitational, taking on the host UT Martin and dropping the match in three sets. The Skyhawks got out right away on the Leathernecks 11-4, forcing WIU to call a timeout. After the timeout, both teams traded points until UT Martin reached set point. Backs against the wall, WIU rattled off five straight points but would fall in set one 25-20. Set two saw the host jump out to a lead and not look back. The Skyhawks led the whole set, taking set two 25-12. Set three saw the fight in WIU. Down 5-1, the Leathernecks would respond with a 5-1 run to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams would trade points, with either one gaining more separation than a point till UT Martin would pull away in the final part of the match to take the 25-21 victory.

Brittany Wulf led the way from the attacking side. The Sophomore from Lincoln, Nebraska, tallied 30 kills, seven aces, and 17 digs over the two-game span. Freshman Elizabeth Ziegler also had another strong performance with 11 kills against UT Martin. The Leathernecks combined for 16 blocks on the defensive side.
