Starr and WIU Get First Win

WIU wins in three sets

MARTIN, Tenn – Western Illinois Volleyball (1-5) took down Alabama A&M (0-6) in their final match of the Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 3). The Leathernecks controlled the match from start to finish claiming the three-set victory. This victory is the first for Coach Dale Starr at Western Illinois.

Set 1
Western Illinois came out on fire to open up the final match of the Skyhawk Invitational. Brittany Wulf started the match with a kill and sparked an opening 9-2 run. Alabama A&M would claw their way back to one (8-9). Both teams would trade points before Alabama A&M errors would help spark a WIU run to extend the lead back to four. Western's offense would pick it up from there. Kills by Wulf and Elizabeth Ziegler would extend WIU lead to seven (19-12). For the second time in the set, Alabama A&M would not go away as they would force Western to call a timeout after a 5-0 run. After the timeout, Alabama A&M would keep chipping away, tying the set at 21. The Leathernecks would end the first set on a 4-0 run to claim it 25-21.

Set 2
Set two was a dog fight from the start. The Leathernecks and Bulldogs traded points, not gaining any separation from each other. Grace Kremer gave WIU a little breathing room as she had multiple kills to push the lead to 12-9. Western would keep the three-point advantage until the Bulldogs would go on a 4-1 run to reclaim the lead (19-18). The run would force WIU to call a timeout and regroup. Out of the timeout, Western Illinois would finish the set on a 7-1 run to take the set 25-20.

Set 3
In reverse from the first two sets, Alabama A&M took control out of the gate. The Bulldogs got out to a 5-1 lead forcing WIU to call an early timeout. The Leathernecks fought their way back. Ziegler had a kill followed by multiple attacking errors by the opposition, tying the set at 8. The Leatherneck attack would keep the pressure on the Bulldogs jumping to a 13-11 lead. Western Illinois would keep holding onto the three-point advantage till Alabama responded with a 3-0 run and tied the set at 16. As they did all day, Western had a response. Ziegler and Kremer went back-to-back with kills to push WIU back out in front 18-16. Both teams would not back down as they would trade points till it was tied at 23. Wulf would get the kill to push Western to match point, and then an attack error by Alabama A&M gave WIU the 25-23 victory.

Elizabeth Ziegler led the team with eight kills on 20 total attacks. All-Tournament selection Brittany Wulf had seven kills, four aces, and 13 digs on the afternoon. Karli Wenzel led the defensive side with 16 digs to go along with her three aces. Grace Nichols, Kremer, and Ziegler led WIU in block assists with two each. Maggie Craker had 18 assists in the three sets.

As a team, Western had an attack percentage of .160. They totaled 11 aces, four total team blocks, and 45 digs.

The Leathernecks have their first-midweek matchup on Tuesday (Sept. 6), taking on Eastern Illinois.
