WIU Battles in Four Set Loss

WIU can't hold on to early lead

Fort Wayne, Ind - Western Illinois Volleyball team dropped their season opener on Friday (Aug. 26) against Lindenwood University 3-1. The Leathernecks took the first set, but Lindenwood clawed out victories in the next three sets.

Set 1
The Lions of Lindenwood started set one on a roll jumping out to a 4-1 lead. The Leathernecks would trade off points with the Lions until Brittany Wulf and Grace Nichols would have back-to-back kills to make it 8-7 Lindenwood. Western Illinois would go on a 4-0 run in the middle of the first set and tie things at 13. Out of the media timeout, Lindenwood would use a 6-0 run to stretch their lead to 21-15. Western Illinois would not go away. Two kills by Wulf, two aces by Nichols, and a Lindenwood attacking error would have the Leathernecks down by one (21-20). Both teams would trade points until Western made their final push. Elizabeth Ziegler would get a kill. Then back-to-back service aces by Wulf would give Western Illinois their first set point. The Lions would have an attacking error as Western would take set 1 25-23.

Set 2
The second set would be a back-and-forth affair. Both teams would go back and forth trading points throughout the second set as no one could pull away. Western would see their lead get up to as many two and three multiple times. Jessie Connell would have the kill to give Western their first two-point lead in the second set (15-13). Out of the media timeout, the Leathernecks would keep holding the advantage until Lindenwood would go on a 6-0 run and pull in front 21-19. WIU would try to fight back, but the Lions would trade points and take set 2 25-21.

Set 3
A lot like set number two, both teams could not find separation early. Tied at 10-10, the Lions would rattle off a 9-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. The Leathernecks did not back down a 9-1 run by themselves would have things tied up at 20. Brittany Wulf would get a kill to help give the Leathernecks a late 23-22 lead. Lindenwood would respond with a 3-0 run to take the set 25-23

Set 4
Lindenwood would jump out early in set four. Gaining a 6-1 advantage, they looked to pull away. Kills by Ziegler, Nichols, and Aubrey Putman would help Western close the gap. Wulf would have another kill on the day to tie things up at 11. Lindenwood would start pulling away and finish set 4 on a 15-7 run to take the final set 25-17.

Brittany Wulf led the way on the attacking side with a team-high 14 kills and three service aces. Grace Nichols shined in her Leatherneck debut with 11 kills and three service aces. Maggie Craker and Jessie Connell led the way in the assist column. Craker tallied 17 assists with Connell having 16 respectively. Karli Wenzel led the team in digs with 17.

The Leathernecks are back in action tomorrow with matches against Canisius and Purdue Fort Wayne.
