WIU Celebrates Senior Day Versus Omaha

Leathernecks fall in both games, will play a must-win series finale on Sunday (May 8).

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Saturday (May 7), dropping both games in a doubleheader to the Mavericks of Omaha. The Leathernecks and Mavericks have one more game in the series, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday (May 8) at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.

Game one: WIU 0 – 9 UNO
Omaha's offense got going early and set the stage for one of the best pitchers in the Summit League, scoring four runs in the first two innings as Western Illinois' bats struggled early. Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle but only pitched one inning, striking out one and allowing one hit. Emily Price pitched the game's final four innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs while striking out four.

Western put runners on base throughout the game, as Bella Alvarez and Jorja Hudson both drew walks, while Gabriela Drager was credited the lone Leatherneck hit after driving a ball to deep left field for a fifth-inning double. Despite the late-game momentum, Western was unable to score any runs and the game finished in favor of the Mavericks.

Game two: Leathernecks 2 – 4 Mavericks
Abby Carlin started in the circle for game two and pitched her 12th complete game of the season, going all seven innings and putting in another strong performance. Carlin allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five, setting the stage for the Leatherneck offense to potentially make some noise.

After finishing game one with one hit, Western's offense came alive in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, finishing with eight hits and two runs. Western scored early, as Georgia Rea doubled to lead off the second inning and was driven in the next at-bat after Jorja Hudson hit a single to left field and advanced to second, tying the game.

Omaha would build a 4-1 advantage as the game progressed, but the Leathernecks continued to fight with a strong seventh inning. Gab Drager got on base with a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an Ami Ill single, setting the state for an RBI single to right by Torince Muczynski, bringing the Leathernecks to within two runs. Savannah Rodriguez walked to load the bases in the next at-bat but Western was unable to capitalize, and the game finished 4-2 in favor of Omaha.

In between both games, Leatherneck fans got the chance to say one last goodbye to the outgoing seniors.

Originally from Carthage, Ill., Daytona Dooley has made 59 appearances (28 starts) in her three-year Western Illinois career. She's been a valuable role player for the team this season, hitting her first-career home run against the Arkansas Razorbacks on Feb. 20 and maintaining a perfect fielding percentage. Dooley will graduate with a degree in Broadcasting and Journalism with an emphasis on sports broadcasting, and will pursue a master's degree in Sports Marketing at WIU.

Ami Ill ended today's doubleheader with 137 career appearances and 100 starts in her collegiate career, spending the last two seasons at Western Illinois. Ill has been a steady contributor as a Leatherneck but has taken her game to the next level this season, improving her batting average by nearly 100 points while leading the team in starts, at-bats, average, runs, hits, triples and total bases. Originally from Mokena, Illinois, Ill will graduate this fall with a degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration and is planning to attend graduate school.

Now in her fifth season as a Leatherneck, Abby Carlin has made 103 appearances, pitching over 470 innings and ranking sixth in program history among pitchers for total appearances. Carlin's numbers speak for themselves, as she has led the team in ERA in each of the last three seasons, and even earned Summit League Pitcher of the Week and Summit League All-Academic honors last season. Entering today, Carlin was top-10 among Summit League pitchers for ERA, wins, starts, complete games, saves and strikeouts. Carlin will graduate from Western Illinois with degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics, and will pursue her PhD in Chemistry at the University of Iowa this fall.

Western is back in action at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
