BASEBALL RALLY FALLS SHORT

BASEBALL RALLY FALLS SHORT

ST. LOUIS – The Western Illinois baseball team's furious rally came up short on Tuesday as the Leathernecks fell on the road at St. Louis in extra innings, 7-6.
Western Illinois trailed 5-0 after five innings but got a huge performance from their bullpen and a balanced offense paced by Gage Cruz.
Cruz started the comeback, launching a solo home run in the sixth to make it a 5-1 game.
CJ Richmond's sacrifice fly in the same inning made it 5-2.
Jack Carberry and Caden Kratz then came out of the bullpen and give WIU a chance, combining to toss five innings of one-run ball while striking out five.
With the bullpen locking down the Billikens, the offense was able to chip away, scoring one in the top of the seventh.
Cruz drove in his second run of the day as his sacrifice fly made it 5-3.
St. Louis would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh but in the top of the eighth, Richmond collected his second RBI of the game with a base hit.
A wild pitch plated Kory Olsen to make it 6-5.
After a scoreless bottom of the eight, WIU tied the game in the top of the ninth as Adam Juran's grounder scored Jack Sievers.
Neither team would manage to score until St. Louis plated the game-winner with two outs in the bottom of the 11th.
The Leathernecks continue their road swing this week, traveling to Indianapolis to take on Butler in a three-game set starting Friday.
Nick Mitchell went 3-4 while Olsen went 2-3 with a run scored.
Richmond and Cruz each drove in two while Juran had a hit, a run and an RBI.
